About Yanesen

Yanesen consists of three towns, which are Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi located in the northeast of Tokyo. Yansen is known as....

Town of Nostalgic Houses

Because Yanesen escaped from two major disasters in 20th century, the great earthquake in 1923 and the bombing during WW2, there remains a lot of old houses during early Shyowa period. Narrow and winding streets run throughout this old neighborhood, leading us to nostalgic feeling.

Town of Temples

In this small neighborhood it is said that there are 70 temples. Maybe Yanesen has the highest population of temple in Tokyo. You can find temples by temples while walking through Yanesen.

Can you imagine why there are so many temples in this small town? The reason is the location of this town. Yanesen is located in the northeast of Tokyo. In old days people believed all evil spirits come from northeast and then they built these temples as a guardian of Tokyo.

Town of Cats

There are many street cats here. I don't know why. Maybe this town is easy to live for cats because the residents here are very kind.

Cats are uncontrollable as you know. Especially street cats are so. You need lucky as well as a good guide to see them.

Town of Unique Shops

Located close to Tokyo University of Art and Music, Yansen used to be living places for many artists like Soho in NY or Montmartre in Paris. That gives artistic atmosphere on top of traditional and nostalgic taste to this town. You can find your favorite shop from various unique shops here.
